Fine Motor Skills

What are Fine Motor Skills?
Fine motor skills are a child’s ability to use small muscles in their hands and fingers to complete activities. Activates that include these skills are grasping small objects, cutting with scissors, buttoning and zipping, using utensils, building with small blocks, and tying shoes.

What Does Difficulty in This Area Look Like?
When a child has difficulty with fine motor skills, you might notice:

  • Trouble holding a pencil, crayon, or scissors correctly
  • Difficulty with buttons, zippers, or tying shoelaces
  • Avoidance of drawing, coloring, or crafts
  • Messy handwriting or trouble staying within lines
  • Frustration with tasks that require small hand movements, like using utensils or manipulating small toys

These challenges can affect independence, schoolwork, and confidence in daily activities.

How Can OT Help Build These Skills?
Occupational therapy helps children develop fine motor skills through:

  • Fun, hands-on activities like drawing, cutting, or using playdough to strengthen hand muscles
  • Games and exercises that improve hand-eye coordination, grip, and finger dexterity
  • Teaching step-by-step strategies for tasks like writing, buttoning shirts, or using utensils
  • Incorporating tools or adaptive devices to make tasks easier while building confidence

With personalized, engaging activities, children can improve their fine motor abilities, making everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable.
