Executive functioning and community-based skills

An Executive Functioning Community-Based Skills Group is a structured small group designed to help individuals (teens and adolescents) with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), brain injuries, or other neurodevelopmental conditions develop real-world executive functioning skills in practical situations and community settings. The group focuses on helping participants improve their ability to plan, organize, initiate, and complete tasks by engaging in hands-on activities and problem solve situations outside the traditional classroom or clinic.

Core Goals:

  • Strengthen time management, organization, and planning skills.
  • Improve social communication and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Practice real-world decision-making and flexibility in unpredictable environments.
  • Build self-monitoring and emotional regulation strategies.

Typical Activities:

  • Planning a grocery shopping trip with a budget.
  • Using public transportation to navigate to a new location.
  • Organizing a community event or volunteer project.
  • Completing a scavenger hunt that requires time management and cooperation.
  • Role-playing social scenarios such as job interviews or ordering food.
